The character will be joining what’s set to be a huge autumn storyline for the soap, returning in the wake of her daughter Louise (Tilly Keeper)’s pregnancy – and determined to get her and Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) out of Walford and away from Phil (Steve McFadden).
Plus she’ll be reunited with Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite) – who’ll she’ll look to for help.
Of course Lisa was at the centre of some pretty explosive storylines last time she was a regular in the soap – but why did she leave? And how long is she back for this time?
Here’s what you need to know…
Why did Lisa Fowler leave EastEnders?
Lisa was originally a regular in Albert Square from 1998-2002.
She’s best remembered in that time for being the person who shot Phil Mitchell, a massive storyline which was watched by 19.8m viewers and even led to a UEFA Cup semi-final clash being delayed to avoid a clash in schedules.
However the character left in 2002 after being axed by then producer Louise Berridge, having returned since then for a few brief appearances.
She became involved with Phil soon after arriving in Walford, initially sparking up a relationship with him while living with Mark Fowler – who was secretly in love with her.
However the relationship was rocky, with Lisa initially falling pregnant and suffering a miscarriage – which she blamed on Phil – and becoming dependent on him after she lost her job.
Phil later cheated on her with best friend Mel (Tamzin Outhwaite) – and Lisa shot him after he humiliated her on the night of Mel’s wedding to Steve Owen (Martin Kemp), saying he had never loved her.
Lisa, who by this time was pregnant with Louise, eventually married Mark, claiming that Louise was his daughter – until she told Sharon (Letitia Dean) was the truth, and Sharon subsequently told Phil.
She eventually moved back in with Phil – but after realising it was their daughter he wanted and not her – they fled the country to Portugal.
Phil later found Lisa and Louise and brought Louise home after blackmailing Lisa with the knowledge that she shot him – while calling her an unfit mother – and left her standing on a clifftop, with her fate unknown.
Lisa later returned on the day of Phil’s wedding to Kate Morton (Jill Halfpenny) to reclaim Louise – which she did after Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) and son Dennis (Nigel Harman) framed Phil for armed robbery.
He was subsequently imprisoned and Lisa won back custody of her daughter.
When was Lisa Fowler last in EastEnders?
The character returned briefly in 2010 and 2017 – the latter for a small but significant appearance after Louise was badly burned by candles at her school prom.
She subsequently kidnapped Louise from hospital, leading to a furious confrontation with Phil during which it was established that she was having mental health issues.
Lisa fought back by hitting Phil with a phone, before Louise was handed over to ambulance staff.
It was mentioned in 2018 that the character was unable to attend Mel’s wedding to Ray Kelly (Sean Mahon) as she had been sectioned.
How long is Lisa Fowler back for?
Lucy Benjamin hasn’t said how long she’ll be back in the Square, but we can expect to see Lisa for a little bit longer than last time.
‘I’m back to do a stint — without giving too much away about how long exactly I’m back for,’ she explained. ‘There’s more of what you would hope to come for Lisa — she always brings trouble! Always causes Phil loads of trouble.’
EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays on BBC One at 8pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm.
