Bauchi needs six million vaccines to stop yellow fever — Governor – The Punch

Armstrong Bakam

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has said six million doses of vaccines are needed to stop the spread of yellow fever that broke out in the state recently.

He said this in a speech during a media chat to mark his administration’s first 100 days in office in Bauchi, adding that the government had requested the vaccines from the World Health Organisation.

Four students of the College of Education, Waka-Biu in Biu Local Government Area of the state were confirmed dead while 12 were hospitalised after a field trip to Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi.

According to the report, those who lost their lives complained of abdominal pains after which they vomited blood.

The governor, who said the yellow fever outbreak was recorded in some parts of the state, particularly Yankari Games Reserve in Alkaleri and Tafawa-Balewa local government areas, however, declared that government was on top of the situation in order to ensure that it did not spread to other parts of the state.

He said the outbreak was as a result of the large population of monkeys around the Game Reserve, adding that government had procured vaccines for use to prevent it from becoming a menace in the state.

Mohammed said some development partners had graciously granted the sum of N6bn support to the state to fight the outbreak, assuring that there was no cause for alarm.

He said, “We are on top of the situation, our health officials are working round the clock to curtail the situation.

“We have already procured some basic vaccines but we need about six million vaccines to prevent it from spreading. The WHO is ready to give us that very soon and with that, we are going to cover everybody in the state in terms of immunisation to make sure that even with the problem,  there is a government in place to tackle it.”

On the general issue of healthcare delivery service, the governor assured that his administration had put machinery in motion to ensure that every month, a health facility was considered for rehabilitation and equipping until every health facility in the state was made to function effectively.
