The Numerous Health Benefits of Wine – – VENTS Magazine

Wine goes back more than 5000 years, and archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest signs of grape wine and viniculture were found in Georgia. Even though it has been around for such a long time, it is fairly recently that in-depth research has shown that wine, when taken in moderation, offers many health benefits, with new benefits being discovered every day.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at some of the numerous health benefits that wine, whether red or white, has to offer!

Wine is rich in antioxidants, and research shows that all of the antioxidants found in wine are extremely effective when it comes to preventing coronary artery disease. In fact, these anti-oxidants are so effective that medical science is currently developing a stent that would release two of the antioxidants found in red wine, resveratrol, and quercetin. The stent would prevent further clogging of any other arteries.

There are mainly two types of cholesterol, High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and Low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL is considered to be good cholesterol as it carries cholesterol from other parts of your body to your liver, where it gets excreted from the body. LDL on the other hand, collects in walls of arteries and vessels, leading to blockages.

Resveratrol, which we discussed above, and phenols, which are another substance found in wine, help fight LDL by limiting its oxidation. These two also promote HDL in the body, meaning that wine helps get rid of cholesterol in the body as well.

Studies have shown that wine can also help fight some forms of cancer. Phenols, which help fight LDL, can also slow down the growth of cancer cells in patients suffering from breast cancer and prostate cancer. Research has also shown some indications that resveratrol can help fight liver and oral cancer as well.

It doesn’t stop at phenols and resveratrol though, as there are many other antioxidants in red wine that have shown signs of being able to fight cancer cells. Research is still ongoing, but the results so far have been promising, to say the least.

The combination of antioxidants and alcohol in wine, along with the fact that wine is a product of fermentation, also help clean up your digestive system and keep everything moving properly. In fact, wine lowers the risk of foodborne diseases, such as the norovirus, as well.

Wine also helps build up immunity to many common viruses including the common cold.

While there is no research to back this up and provide conclusive evidence, but surveys have shown that both men and women who drank one glass of wine per day had 12 to 16 per cent greater bone density than those who did not partake. This could be a coincidence, but until the contrary is proven conclusively, we’ll give red wine the benefit of the doubt!

While the benefits are numerous and, more importantly, real, one needs to remember that wine is an alcoholic drink, and moderation is key. Just because wine keeps your heart clean doesn’t mean that you have carte blanche as to the amount you drink. Drink responsibly and in moderation so as to avoid hangovers and sometimes, more serious health complications. For more guides and tips on wine, head on over to
