Real Madrid They meet a number of familiar faces in September
Real Madrid begin the month of September in the knowledge that things do not get any easier after a troublesome start to the campaign, yet they are now also worried about the curse of the former players in the coming weeks.
A number of former players are set to face Los Merengues in September, including former player and former coach Julen Lopetegui – who is now coaching Sevilla.
Difficult fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and the Andalusian club are on the calendar in September and, whilst there are multiple quality players on each of those teams, there are a few Zinedine Zidane knows well.
The reunions start this weekend against Levante, on September 14, with the match against Borja Mayoral‘s side.
Then comes a Champions League match against PSG, when Keylor Navas, Pablo Sarabia and Angel Di Maria will all be coming up against their former club on September 18.
It’s a tasty trip to take on Sevilla on September 22 after that, when Lopetegui will be out for revenge against Los Merengues after being sacked by the club in the 2018/19 season.
Real Madrid loanee Sergio Reguilon can play in the Sevilla vs Real Madrid match, and he will have a particular score to settle with Zidane who never really gave him the chance from the moment he returned, especially after he became first-choice left-back under Santiago Solari.
At the end of the month, on September 28, the Madrid derby will see several Real Madrid alumni taking on their former team.
Alvaro Morata‘s case is an interesting one, especially as he has burned Los Blancos before back in 2015 when with Juventus.
Marcos Llorente wasn’t a player Zidane counted on or wanted in his squad, although he could now cause them pain in the Madrid derby.
Mario Hermoso, meanwhile, grew up in the Real Madrid youth system, but now represents Los Colchoneros and will be hoping to keep a clean sheet against his former club, further consolidating Atletico‘s fine start to the current campaign.
There are lots of meetings with familiar faces coming up for Real Madrid, who’ll hope that the matter of these players celebrating or not against their former club doesn’t even come up.
